You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a car with plenty of acceleration, corner-carving prowess, or a combination of both. There are a handful of mainstream sports cars (such as the Ford Mustang GT pictured above) that are relatively inexpensive. Several small cars and luxury small cars that perform exceedingly well are reasonably priced, too. Additionally, a few midsize and large performance-oriented cars make the cut.
We’ve compiled the following list of cars with positive performance reviews, powerful engines, and good overall driving dynamics. Every car on the list ranges between $20,000 and $40,000. Some vehicles even offer a few different high-performance trims to choose from.
We update our scores and rankings regularly as new data and expert research become available. For this reason, the scores mentioned in this article may not match those listed in our new car reviews.

2019 Mazda Miata Sport
$25,500 | 181 hp | Performance Score: 9.3/10
The Mazda Miata gets a more powerful engine for the 2019 model year, which ups the ante on its fun-to-drive factor. Even with the outgoing engine, the Miata placed well in our sports car rankings. This is partly due to its exceptional handling, and an attractive cockpit with roomy, supportive seats.
The Miata comes equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, though a six-speed automatic is available. It comes as a convertible with a manually folding soft top or a power-retractable hard top. Bluetooth, HD Radio, two USB ports, and a 7-inch touch screen are standard.
